Noniterative Solution of Some Fermat-Weber Location Problems

چکیده

The Fermat-Weber problem of optimally locating a service facility in the Euclidean continuous two-dimensional space is usually solved by the iterative process first suggested by Weiszfeld or by later versions thereof. The methods are usually rather efficient, but exceptional problems are described in the literature in which the iterative solution is exceedingly long. These problems are such that the solution either coincides with one of the demand points or nearly coincides with it. We describe a noniterative direct alternative, based on the insight that the gradient components of the individual demand points can be considered as pooling forces with respect to the solution point. It is demonstrated that symmetrical problems can thus be optimally solved with no iterations, in analogy to finding the equilibrium point in statics. These include a wellknown ill-conditioned problem and its variants, which can now be easily solved to optimality using geometrical considerations.

Solving single facility goal Weber location problem using stochastic optimization methods

Location theory is one of the most important topics in optimization and operations research. In location problems, the goal is to find the location of one or more facilities in a way such that some criteria such as transportation costs, customer traveling distance, total service time, and cost of servicing are optimized. In this paper, we investigate the goal Weber location problem in which the...

The three-dimensional Fermat-Weber problem with Tchebychev distances

The three-dimensional Fermat-Weber facility location problem with Tchebychev distances is investigated. Expanding on previous research for the analogous two-dimensional problem, this study presents a new algorithm for solving the elusive three-dimensional case. The algorithm presented herein finds near optimal solutions in practical computational times. Some experimental results are also convey...

We give the first exact algorithmic study of facility location problems that deal with finding a median for a continuum of demand points. In particular, we consider versions of the “continuous k-median (Fermat-Weber) problem” where the goal is to select one or more center points that minimize the average distance to a set of points in a demand region. In such problems, the average is computed a...
